the morro velho mine in low valley near nova lima, 12 miles (19 km) belo horizonte. company invested significant amounts improving infrastructure, , increased production. first dividends paid in 1842. company encouraged british miners come work in brazil, , employed slaves until emancipated in late 19th century. after gongo soco mine closed in 1856 of cornish miners found work in brazilian mines operated saint john d el rey mining company. cornish formed majority of british miners @ morro velho, numbering 350 in 1860s.


a fire caused mine collapse in 1867, , took 7 years bring operation. in 1870s superintendent found engaged in fraud , had fired. rock fall in 1886 caused mine collapse again, , company went temporary liquidation. mine reopened , again became profitable in 1890s. @ 1 time morro velho mine deepest in world, 2,545 metres (8,350 ft) below entrance adit. after revolution of 1930 miner s union formed.


strikes reduced production , infrastructure fell disrepair.
