the diocese created on 12 september 1817 papal bull romanus pontifex of pope pius vii, , permission of king of naples registered on 20 february 1818. suffragan of diocese of monreale, 20 may 1844 entered in ecclesiastic province of siracusa. 2 december 2000, pope john paul ii s papal bull, ad maiori consulendum, diocese became suffragan of archdiocese of catania. on 20 march 2010, 15° bishop of caltagirone, calogero peri, o.f.m.cap., first bishop consecrated in st. julian s cathedral of caltagirone.
