purple-rumped sunbirds tiny @ less 10 cm long. have medium-length thin down-curved bills , brush-tipped tubular tongues, both adaptations nectar feeding. purple-rumped sunbirds sexually dimorphic. males have dark maroon upperside blue-green crown glistens @ angles, bright green shoulder patch , violet/purple rump patch hidden under wings. underparts whitish dark throat, maroon breast band , purple/violet patch in throat visible in angles. iris reddish in color. in western ghats, can overlap in areas crimson-backed sunbird male of species has reddish upperparts, broader breast band , darker eyes. female has white throat followed yellowish breast. upperside olive or brownish. uppertail coverts black , weak supercilium may visible. nominate subspecies sri lanka has more bluish violet throat whereas indian form flaviventris (two other proposed populations whistleri maddur in karnataka , sola pondicherry subsumed) has more pinkish tinge.
