in january 1930, due economic problems , general unpopularity, 2nd marqués de estella resigned prime minister. alfonso, marqués s ally, shared popular dislike. king had closely associated primo de rivera dictatorship difficult him distance himself regime had supported 7 years. in april 1931, general le marqués del rif told him army not loyal. on 12 april, republican parties won landslide victory in municipal elections. municipal elections fought virtual referendum on future of monarchy. on 14 april, fled country second spanish republic proclaimed, did not formally abdicate. settled in rome.


by law of 26 november 1931, alfonso accused cortes of high treason. law later repealed new law dated 15 december 1938, signed francisco franco.
