since founding of ottoman empire, ottomans followed maturidi creed (school of islamic theology) , hanafi madhab (school of islamic jurisprudence). however, ash ari creed more prevalent in madrassahs (islamic schools). both maturidi , ash ari schools of islamic theology used ilm al-kalam (reason) understand quran , hadith (sayings , actions of mohammed , rashidun) apply islamic principles fatwas (islamic rulings). in contrast athari (or literal) school of islamic theology takes quran , hadith literally.
