dhea , dhea sulfate produced adrenal glands. in people adrenal insufficiency such in addison s disease, there may deficiency of dhea , dhea sulfate. in addition, levels of these steroids decrease throughout life , 70 80% lower in elderly relative levels in young adults. such, dhea , dhea sulfate levels lower in older people. prasterone can used increase dhea , dhea sulfate levels in adrenal insufficiency , older age. although there deficiency of these steroids in such individuals, clinical benefits of supplementation, if any, uncertain, , there insufficient evidence @ present support use of prasterone such purposes.


in clinical studies of prasterone supplementation, dosages have ranged 20 1,600 mg per day. in people adrenal insufficiency, oral dosages of 20 50 mg/day prasterone have been found restore dhea , dhea-s levels normal ranges seen in healthy young adults. conversely, oral dosages of 100 200 mg/day prasterone have been found result in supraphysiological levels of dhea , dhea-s.


menopause

prasterone used androgen in hormone replacement therapy (hrt) menopause. in addition prasterone itself, long-lasting ester prodrug of prasterone, prasterone enanthate, used in combination estradiol valerate treatment of menopausal symptoms under brand name gynodian depot.

prasterone, under brand name intrarosa, approved in united states in vaginal insert formulation treatment of atrophic vaginitis (vaginal atrophy). mechanism of action of prasterone indication unknown, though may involve local metabolism of prasterone androgens , estrogens.


childbirth
