the interaction of tropical wave , elongated trough led development of tropical depression 12:00 utc on september 14 375 mi (605 km) east of chetumal, mexico. depression intensified tropical storm karl 6 hours later , continued strengthen until moving ashore near rio huach, mexico, winds of 65 mph (100 km/h) @ 12:45 utc on september 15. although storm s winds diminished on land, structure of storm improved, allowing karl become hurricane 18:00 utc on september 16 once emerging on bay of campeche. period of rapid deepening brought cyclone peak of 125 mph (205 km/h) on september 17, major hurricane on record in bay of campeche. increasing shear , dry air entrainment caused karl weaken slightly, retained winds of 115 mph (185 km/h) while making landfall north of veracruz, mexico 16:45 utc on september 17. system weakened rapidly on mountainous terrain of mexico, falling tropical storm intensity 00:00 utc on september 18, weakening tropical depression 6 hours later, , dissipating 85 mi (140 km) southeast of veracruz 12:00 utc.
