the home port of austro-hungarian navy seearsenal (naval base) @ pola (now pula, croatia), role took on venice, austrian navy had been based. supplementary bases included busy port of trieste , natural harbour of cattaro (now kotor, montenegro) @ southerly point of austro-hungarian empire. both trieste , pola had major shipbuilding facilities. pola s naval installations contained 1 of largest floating drydocks in mediterranean. city of pola site of central church of navy stella maris (k.u.k. marinekirche stella maris ), of austro-hungarian naval observatory , empire s naval military cemetery (k.u.k. marinefriedhof). in 1990, cemetery restored after decades of neglect communist regime in yugoslavia. austro-hungarian naval academy (k.u.k. marine-akademie) located in fiume (now rijeka, croatia).
