the name cottian comes marcus julius cottius, king of tribes inhabiting mountainous region in 1st century bc. these tribes had opposed later made peace julius caesar. cottius succeeded son, named marcus julius cottius, granted title of king emperor claudius.


on death, nero annexed kingdom province of alpes cottiae.
