monument erected in 2011


the victims bodies recovered , buried in cemetery @ north head, near scene of shipwreck. grave site marked wooden plaque until stone monument erected in 1910, bearing inscription in memory of 21 seamen drowned on northern head of grand manan jan. 19th 1857 belonging ship lord ashburton. in 2011 new monument replaced 1910 stone.


the survivors of wreck cared villagers , later taken hospital in saint john. 1 of men had managed climb cliff danish seaman named james lawson. because of injuries , exposure cold, of toes had amputated. became shoemaker , returned grand manan, spent rest of life living , working in village of north head. died in 1918 @ age of 84.


the headland shipwreck happened had been locally called eel brook point. after wreck came known ashburton head, later established official name geographical names board of canada.

deep sea mining relatively new mineral retrieval process takes place on ocean floor. ocean mining sites around large areas of polymetallic nodules or active , extinct hydrothermal vents @ 1,400 – 3,700 meters below ocean s surface. vents create sulfide deposits, contain precious metals such silver, gold, copper, manganese, cobalt, , zinc. deposits mined using either hydraulic pumps or bucket systems take ore surface processed. mining operations, deep sea mining raises questions environmental damages surrounding areas because deep sea mining relatively new field, complete consequences of full-scale mining operations unknown. however, experts removal of parts of sea floor result in disturbances benthic layer, increased toxicity of water column, , sediment plumes tailings. removing parts of sea floor disturbs habitat of benthic organisms, possibly, depending on type of mining , location, causing permanent disturbances. aside direct impact of mining area, leakage, spills, , corrosion alter...
