vaninger grew in st. louis, missouri , attended st. mary s high school played on boys soccer team. team won 1970 missouri state high school championship. season, vaninger scored twenty-three goals. after graduating high school, vaninger attended st. louis florisant valley community college 1970 1972. played 2 seasons on school s soccer team, earning junior college all-american honors both seasons. florisant valley won national junior college championship in both 1970 , 1971. in addition playing florisant valley, vaninger member of st. louis kutis. in 1971, kutis won u.s. national amateur cup. vaninger assisted on third of kutis 4 goals in 4-1 win on cleveland, ohio club inter-italian.
professional
in 1973, vaninger signed st. louis stars of north american soccer league (nasl). in 11–4 indoor dismantling @ hands of visiting red army team on february 13, 1974, accounted 4 stars goals. vaninger spent 5 seasons stars until folded @ end of 1977 season. moved fort lauderdale strikers 1978 , 1979 season. however, in 1979, played 1 game , left nasl sign new jersey americans. in 1980, joined miami americans of american soccer league played 1 season. in 1980, vaninger signed expansion st. louis steamers of major indoor soccer league (misl). played 2 seasons steamers until 1982. sources state continued play professionally until 1983. vaninger tied misl record 3 powerplay goals in 1 game.
national team
vaninger earned 3 caps u.s. national team in 1974 , 1975. first game came september 5, 1974, when scored lone u.s. goal in 3-1 loss mexico. last game came in march 26, 1975 loss poland in poland.
