route description

maintenance of ny 89 split between new york state department of transportation (nysdot) , city of ithaca. of ny 89 state-maintained; however, locally maintained in ithaca cayuga lake inlet crossing northern city line. portion of ny 89 along west shore of cayuga lake ithaca intersection us 20 , ny 5 near montezuma national wildlife refuge part of cayuga lake scenic byway, loop route passing through ithaca, seneca falls, , union springs.

tompkins county

ny 89 begins @ intersection of north meadow , west buffalo streets (the former carrying northbound ny 13 , ny 34) in west end of city of ithaca. here, ny 96 exits north meadow street , overlaps ny 89 westward along buffalo street. 2 routes intersect north fulton street (ny 13 , ny 34 southbound) , cross on branch of cayuga lake inlet before separating @ taughannock boulevard. while ny 96 continues west on buffalo street, ny 89 heads north on taughannock boulevard, crossing on inlet , running along western shore of cayuga lake exits city , enters town of same name.

outside of ithaca, ny 89 heads northwestward along western side of valley surrounding cayuga lake. due steep terrain of surrounding area, portion of route passes through sparsely populated , forested areas. in ulysses, northernmost town ny 89 passes through in tompkins county, highway serves taughannock falls state park, linear park follows taughannock creek west village of trumansburg. ny 89 crosses northernmost portion of park on way seneca county.

seneca county

in seneca county, ny 89 remains relatively isolated in relation other state routes, though leaves lake valley @ southern county line alignment takes along western lip of gully. first 11 miles (18 km) in county, ny 89 closely parallels ny 96, latter of located on higher ground short distance west. while ny 96 serves several hamlets , village of interlaken, ny 89 heads across largely unpopulated areas of towns of covert , ovid , traverses little more farmland. routes diverge @ romulus town line, ny 96 turns west toward village of ovid.

ny 89, meanwhile, continues northward romulus, gradually moves closer western lake shore descends lake valley. reaches shoreline near hamlet of elm beach, route continues along cayuga lake 7 miles (11 km) town of varick. along way, ny 89 serves dozens of lakeside homes , several small communities, including east varick. 7-mile stretch ends @ fayette town line, route leaves lake take more inland routing through town. result, lakeside homes give way farmland once again, , rolling terrain follows ny 89 northward town of seneca falls.

the route proceeds northward through seneca falls, serving cayuga lake state park , small hamlet of bridgeport prior crossing on cayuga–seneca canal (part of seneca river) near northern tip of cayuga lake. past canal, ny 89 begins run along west side of montezuma marsh, main component of montezuma national wildlife refuge. not far canal intersection us 20 , ny 5, connect ny 89 nearby hamlet of seneca falls. ny 318 ends @ us 20 , ny 5 0.1 miles (0.16 km) west of junction. ny 89 continues on, in town of tyre, passing on new york state thruway , traversing part of refuge before crossing erie canal , entering wayne county.

wayne county

just inside wayne county limits, ny 89 leaves northern alignment , turns east onto armitage road, runs along seneca–wayne county line. on 1 mile (1.6 km) east, ny 89 intersects ny 31 @ commercialized intersection in otherwise rural area of town of savannah. while ny 31 eastbound travels southeast seneca county , nearby montezuma marsh, ny 31 westbound joins ny 89 northbound through savannah. routes pass farmland; however, open fields gradually give way homes , businesses road approaches hamlet of savannah.

ny 31 , ny 89 enter savannah on high street, carries both routes northeastward on csx transportation-owned rochester subdivision. north of overpass, routes pass 2 blocks of homes before turning west onto east church street. overlap ends 1 block later in savannah s central business district, ny 89 splits ny 31 follow north main street out of hamlet. open fields return 0.5 miles (0.8 km) hamlet s center, , ny 89 heads north across mixture of open fields , marshland 10 miles (16 km) towns of butler , wolcott. here, route ends south of village of wolcott @ partial diamond interchange ny 104. junction provides access ny 104 westbound , ny 104 eastbound; other connections made way of countryman road, east–west highway located north of interchange.
