after world war ii, dee family bought pellet machines , repurposed them make candy. gave candy resemblance tablet-style pills in shape , texture. when sugar prices spiked in 1970s, ce de candy switched sucrose dextrose. in 1990s, dee family purchased website smarties.com.


in 2004, ce de candy co., inc., in conjunction rock vote, manufactured 500,000 special edition smarties rock vote on wrapper. 3.5-ounce theater box released in 2009, retro on boxes. in 2011, ce de candy company, inc. changed name smarties candy company. in august 2011, company confirmed smarties vegan.
