with ashes loss in 4 tests australian side touted supposedly worst ever tour england prior start of series, england side entered fifth test looking demoralised , dejected. english selectors once again chopped , changed line-up, including addition of 2 new debutants – michael atherton, , devon malcolm. despite series having been decided, fifth test @ trent bridge defined 1989 ashes series. having won toss , confidently decided bat, border s charges piled on runs once again. opening stand of 329 between mark taylor , geoff marsh lasted 4 sessions, highest opening stand in ashes test, in test in england, , fifth highest partnership first wicket in tests. stand allowed australia bat throughout day 2 , third, reaching 600 second time in series before declaring innings closed 6 wickets down.


with terry alderman again demolishing demoralised england batting line-up, taking 5 69 restrict them 255, england again forced follow on. returned on morning of day 4 1 first innings wicket in hand, , still 354 runs behind australia. last wicket fell on, , border enforced follow on. second innings worse, lasting disappointing 55 overs, out 167, wickets being shared amongst australians.


day one


the australians arrived in nottingham trent bridge test giddy after regaining ashes, , being first australian side win series in england since 1975 ashes series. weather , pitch looked suited batting, , on winning toss, allan border had no hesitation in choosing so. happened next went down 1 of memorable moments in ashes folklore.


england opened bowling relatively inexperienced pair of devon malcolm , angus fraser, , australia s opening batsmen mark taylor , geoff marsh tore them apart. nottingham crowd treated exciting display of mixture of stroke-play , powerful hitting. pair batted throughout morning , had passed 50. botham , hemmings brought in bowl, equally ineffective. australians both looked set , determined, , mis-timed or beaten.


by lunch score had gone past 150, both openers passing half-centuries. after earned break, resumed had left off, scoring freely throughout afternoon. tea had gone past 200, taylor first bring century, followed after marsh. pair, might expected after such long day, had slowed down in final session, stumps australia s score stood @ 301 0. taylor not out on 141 , marsh not out on 125. first time ever in history no wicket had fallen on first day of test match in england.


day two


the australian opening pair started day 2 had left off day before. free-flowing strokes around wicket kept scoreboard ticking over, , england s bowlers looked lost. had tried 6 bowlers – fraser, malcolm, botham, hemmings, cook, , batsman atherton – before breakthrough came mid-morning. geoff marsh caught botham off bowling of cook 138. innings had lasted on 7 hours, facing 382 balls , struck 15 fours. innings remain all-time test best.


the england team had removed 1 of openers, partner remained steadfast in concentration, , joined determined looking david boon. boon, of dark days of mid-1980s australian cricket had remained rock in top order, had yet score century far in series, , looked set try right wrong. , taylor breezed australian total past 350, taylor bringing 150 in process.


england had failed capitalise on breakthrough, , boon-taylor partnership resumed pace , tempo of previous taylor-marsh one. batted throughout morning , australia went past 400, still 1 wicket down. england fielders looked tired , dejected. mark taylor brought personal 200, becoming first australian score double century in england since 1970. however, not long after, exhausted looking taylor tried dance down wicket once attempting hit cook down ground, , out excellently stumped russell 219. innings lasted on 9 hours, during faced 461 balls , struck 23 fours. dismissal saw australia @ 430 2, partnership of boon , taylor worth 101. remain taylor s highest test score until made astonishing 334* during 1998-99 australia v pakistan series.


taylor s dismissal didn t end misery england s bowlers however. captain allan border came wicket seemingly inspired efforts of top three. , boon took score past 500, before boon likewise stumped russell off cook, out 73, century still eluding despite consistent batting throughout series. dean jones added rapid 22, out caught gower off angus fraser, , 1 highlight of australian innings england came next when in-form steve waugh out duck. wicket-keeper ian healy joined captain, , pair saw australia 560 5 @ stumps.

england forced face awkward period before lunch, , duly obliged tourists succumbing pressure. martyn moxon fell third ball duck in first over, caught waugh @ point slashing @ out-swinger terry alderman. debutant mike atherton went 2 balls later, fooled alderman s trademark in-swinging yorker trapped him in front out lbw. england ended first on 2 1. tim curtis fared little better, out few overs later 2, out lbw alderman. robin smith , david gower went someway stabilising england innings, when captain gower tempted play @ off-cutter outside off stump geoff lawson got outside edge , caught behind 11. once again keeper jack russell called upon try provide lower order resistance failing england line-up. did so, time in form of providing support smith, started comfortable others had failed. smith s stroke-play became audacious, elegant @ times. moved past 50, lost russell after. keeper-batsman caught behind healy off lawson 20. hemmings likewise provided support smith, chiming in useful 38, , helping smith take england total past 200 before spectacularly clean-bowled alderman. smith crept on line make made century, out 1 run later 101, caught behind healy off alderman, giving west australian yet 5 wicket haul, fifth of series far. alderman finished english first innings 5 69.


the final session 1 of minor frustrations australia bowlers, looked knock on england tail. first fraser 29, injured ian botham batting down order 11, , number 11 devon malcolm along fellow bowler cook saw england survive stumps, finishing day on 246 9.


day four


the last england pair continued frustrate australian bowlers first few overs of day four, adding 9 runs last wicket, malcolm out caught behind off merv hughes 9, , england s first innings came close 255 in 76.5 overs. still 347 behind australian total, border had no hesitation in making england follow on. captain gower decided captain s innings leading front necessary, , promoted himself number 1 in order. despite striking 1 glorious 4, backfired spectacularly when out 5 on fifth ball of innings, clean bowled geoff lawson. curtis added 6 , there no heroics smith in second innings, out 26 leave england @ 67 3. debutant atherton looked finding feet, despite being on receiving end of hostile bowling, , more hostile sledging merv hughes, , moved awkwardly on towards 50. , demoted moxon added useful 49 fourth wicket, before moxon succumbed peach of in-swinging yorker alderman have off stump cart-wheeling backwards out of ground.


russell add 1, clean bowled lawson, , when atherton caught , bowled off-spinner trevor hohns 47, frustrating 3 shy of debut half-century, england again reeling on 120 6. lunch brought little reprieve england, seemed consigned fate. fraser add 1 before undone spin of hohns , clean-bowled. hemmings had kept score creeping along determined 35 out lbw hughes , when malcolm clean bowled hughes 5 few overs later, leaving england 167 9, decided match lost, , england did not wish risk injured botham, went absent hurt , england out 167. mark taylor s brilliant 219 earned him man-of-the-match award.


australia had won fifth test of 1989 ashes series innings , 180 runs inside 4 days lead best of 6 test series 4-0.
