on 23 november 2015, prime minister, david cameron, announced raf buy 9 new boeing p-8a poseidon maritime patrol aircraft part of 2015 strategic defence , security review. aircraft , 400 personnel based @ lossiemouth , @ least 3 aircraft operational april 2020. @ farnborough air show on 11 july 2016, ministry of defence , boeing confirmed deal had been agreed , intend work jointly build new £100m poseidon operational support , training base @ lossiemouth, creating more 100 new jobs.
in june 2017 announced no. 120 squadron reformed first poseidon unit in april 2019. no. 201 squadron later reform second unit in 2021. squadrons had operated nimrod mr2 maritime patrol aircraft @ raf kinloss , between them comprise eighteen aircrews.

the defence secretary michael fallon announced on 4 march 2016 lossiemouth preferred option accommodate additional typhoon squadron , 400 personnel. squadron 1 of 2 typhoon squadrons raf, announced part of 2015 strategic defence , security review. expected operational april 2019.

the defence infrastructure organisation formally announced lossiemouth development programme (ldp) on october 2016 through publication of prior information procurement notice. ldp see £400 million invested in raf lossiemouth buildings , airfield infrastructure allow additional typhoon squadron , new poseidon aircraft operate lossiemouth, such new control tower, defence fire , rescue service facilities, single , family living accommodation. professional consultancy firm wyg plc. have been appointed programme manager of ldp.
in february 2017 environmental impact assessment (eia) screening opinion redevelopment work submitted moray council, local planning authority. submission moray council outlined following proposed works @ station.
redevelopment of existing buildings , construction of new buildings accommodate poseidon aircraft , additional typhoon squadron.
construction of new buildings including new hangar 165.86 m × 103.85 m × 19.15 m (544.2 ft × 340.7 ft × 62.8 ft) poseidon aircraft, near northern perimeter of airfield.
refurbishment and/or extension of hangar no.2 , support facilities additional typhoon squadron.
construction of replacement airfield fire station

moray council determined proposed works did not meet requirement go through eia process.
