bottineau founded in 1883 oak creek customs station , overnight stagecoach stop. town name changed bottineau in 1884 in honor of pierre bottineau (c.1814-1895), métis pioneer, hunter, , trapper became successful land speculator.
the town located 1.5 miles north of current location. entire town moved south in 1887 great northern railway installing new tracks.
