synopsis

time: 1921


act 1

act 1 begins after performance in paris great singing actress, odette darimonde, starring @ châtelet in operetta la bayadère. after witnessing many of performances, young indian prince radjami von lahore has fallen helplessly in love , asks theater manager arrange introduction. anxious make bride immediately, parents have arranged marriage waiting him home. odette makes clear him, however, has no interest in him. radjami engages of young man, napoleon st. cloche, assist him in cause. napoleon has own worries trying seduce young married lady, marietta, whom brags of world travels, tiger hunting in india, and, in fact, acquaintance prince. prince again expresses love odette, hypnotising roses, , begs marry him. @ impromptu party throwing @ palace, appears roses in hand , seemingly under spell.


act 2

act 2 takes place in parisian palace of prince. @ party, radjami tells odette before night over, succumb advances, teaching him waltz. intent on wedding evening, radjami calls on friend napoleon witness, impressing marietta agrees divorce husband, louis-philipp, , wed persistent suitor. ceremony uniting radjami , odette proceeds, awakens trance, mocks arrogance in assuming ever his, , leaves him humiliated. act ends promises indeed love him day.


act 3

act 3 takes place @ little bar in paris. marietta , napoleon married, has learned of exaggerations , finds him boring louis-philipp, appears smartly dressed , newly appointed radjami counsul india. napoleon, bored marietta him, tells louis-philipp can have back. radjami engages pimprinette, theater claque leader, him stage scene whereby appears if radjami has returned india. odette grief-stricken. radjami appears, assured of love, falls arms.
