the station signed-on october 18, 1981, airing analog signal on vhf channel 12. first independent station in idaho, , featured programming offerings consisting of syndicated talk , children shows in day , movies in evenings. owned peyton broadcasting. peyton sold station block communications in 1985. station became fox affiliate when network launched in 1986. added -tv suffix calls on july 10, 2006. on february 6, 2009, ktrv added mynetworktv , tv new second , third digital subchannels. until point, there no affiliates of either network in boise. ktrv-dt2 not added cable 1 systems until year later on january 11, 2010.


on september 1, 2011, ktrv s affiliation agreement fox expired after network moved cw outlet knin-tv, channel 9 (then owned journal broadcast group part of duopoly abc affiliate kivi-tv, channel 6). on september 12 of same year, cw plus (seen on knin-dt2 , cable 1 systems) moved low-powered retro television network (rtv) affiliate kyuu-lp can seen on second digital subchannel of cbs affiliate kboi-tv, channel 2 (both owned sinclair broadcast group in duopoly).


as result of these changes, ktrv reverted independent status. switch, boise became 1 of few television markets in united states 4 out of 6 broadcast networks (abc, cbs, nbc, , fox) having primary affiliations in market containing 5 full-power commercial stations , remaining 2 (the cw , mynetworktv program service) digital multicast channels.


its weeknight prime time programming lineup independent began on september 19 double run of 30 rock @ 7 p.m. , law & order: criminal intent @ 8 p.m. ktrv maintained schedule similar other stations not affiliated big 3 network or fox. in attempt keep programming options fresh, ktrv planned rotate lineup every 5 or 6 months networks. in addition, ktrv became heavily involved in airing of live local sports cover treasure valley s 3 minor league franchises. ktrv-dt2 s mynetworktv affiliation remained on 12.2, added metv programming.










by october 2011, tv moved new third digital subchannel of ktrv , presumably new channel location on cable 1 systems. last fox program air on station buried treasure. ktrv moved mynetworktv primary channel on january 23, 2012, leaving 12.2 full metv affiliate. left boise 1 of markets 5 of 6 largest networks carried primary affiliations plus sixth (the cw) on digital subchannel in market 5 commercially-licensed full-service television stations—a situation similar had existed in boise market prior fox switching affiliation ktrv knin less 5 months earlier. on september 6, 2014, ktrv-tv discontinued tv affiliation on 12.3 , replaced movies! becoming first tv station in area broadcast network.


on september 1, 2016, ktrv joined ion television affiliate. station had announced on august 31 become ion affiliate october 1; in announcement, block communications chairman allan block said timing right move more immersive network. while mynetworktv programming continued air in prime time secondary affiliation, removed in 2017. on march 2, 2017, metv affiliation moved knin-tv digital subchannel 9.2, replacing heroes & icons (which resulted in programming realignment saw h&i affiliation move krid-ld 22.3, while station s local programming service boise tv moved krid-ld s 22.3 subchannel 22.9 feed).


on june 20, 2017, ion media networks announced purchase ktrv-tv block communications undisclosed amount (in deal separate purchase announced on date of fellow ion television affiliates wrbu in st. louis , wzrb in columbia, south carolina ion media-backed trust overseen former lin media ceo gary chapman). sale completed on october 24, 2017.
