former mining trestle in coal city


in 1885, group of settlers established town in carbon county, utah, , called oak springs bench. because town s elevation approximately 7,000 feet (2,100 m), farming , ranching difficult. however, after town settled, coal discovered in area. small-scale mining took place under great western coal mines company, mining operations weren t large due town s distance nearest railroad. in august 1921, permanent town site platted , renamed coal city, after deposits of coal in area. town incorporated in october 1921. although of houses tents, log school house served coal city in 1925, , replaced brick schoolhouse in 1927. later year, couple stores , bakery constructed, , made business district. few dozen homes constructed around stores. town s residents lacked stress mining operations because located away larger mining operations in national , consumers. @ peak, population 70. in 1926, mine superintendent, george storrs, indicted mail fraud. though cleared of charges, in december 1926, storrs s mining company went bankrupt , halted operations. town began decline in 1935 , 1940 uninhabited. few buildings remain in coal city, including 2 stores, several houses, , few outbuildings.
