in february 1882 secretary thompson had despatched naval lieutenants giles harber , william schuetze delta search traces of lost explorers, particularly of chipp s party. unsuccessful, in november received orders secretary supervise return of bodies of de long , comrades united states. weather , bureaucracy delayed them year; finally, in november 1883 bodies taken yakutsk train moscow, berlin, , hamburg. here placed on board u.s. steamer frisia, arrived in new york in february 1884. funeral cortège escorted naval , military detachments church of holy trinity on madison avenue memorial service. afterwards bodies of ambler, collins , boyd claimed private burial; of de long , 6 others taken woodlawn cemetery in bronx, , buried there. in october 1890 large monument expedition s dead unveiled @ united states naval academy in annapolis. design based on original cairn , cross raised @ burial site on lena delta.


a mountain range in alaska, , 2 naval ships, named in de long s honor. 3 arctic islands discovered during expedition, plus 2 others discovered few years later, form archipelago bears name ostrova de longa; despite melville s planting of american flag, islands have been accepted russian territory.


on 30 september 1890 congress authorized suitable medals struck (8 congressional gold medals , 25 congressional silver medals) in commemoration of perils encountered 33 officers , men of expedition.


the expedition provided key scientific information. on june 18, 1884, wreckage jeannette found on ice floe near julianehåb (now qaqortoq), near south-western corner of greenland. proved continuous ocean current flowed east west across polar sea, , basis of nansen s fram expedition of 1893–96. also, although open polar sea theory ended jeannette s voyage, ship s meteorological , oceanographic records have provided 21st-century climatologists valuable data relating climate change , shrinking of polar icecap.


alone of main survivors in jeannette drama, melville returned arctic, helped rescue survivors of adolphus greely s lady franklin bay expedition of 1881–84. melville s naval career prospered, , achieved rank of rear admiral. died in 1912. danenhower continued in navy, shot himself during fit of depression in 1887. in 1892, james bartlett, struggled mental problems after return, first threatened kill wife , niece before attempting make on promise next day. wife survived gunshot wound shoulder, both niece , bartlett died. nindemann worked naval engineer until death in 1913. last survivor of expedition herbert leach, became factory worker; lived until 1933. emma de long died @ age of 91, in 1940.


in february 2015 russian adventurer andrey khoroshev announced proposed locate , raise wreck of jeannette. khoroshev told siberian times vessel in known location, in relatively shallow water, not such hard task . event would, thought, boost russia s deteriorating relations america.
