other visible european communities have settled in east vancouver include polish (e.g. polish veterans association meeting hall on kingsway, polish hall on fraser street), german (alpine club of canada hall on victoria drive), croatian (the croatian cultural centre near trout lake, croatian catholic church on 1st avenue) , hungarian (the hungarian cultural society s centre on kingsway @ fraser, , st. elizabeth of hungary catholic church on e. 7th @ commercial drive).

a chinese community existed before vancouver incorporated (1886) , shortly after date became established @ today s chinatown in eastern part of downtown vancouver.. chinese immigration city grew after 1947 when racial immigration exclusion laws removed bc government. since 1980s, many chinese immigrants choose live outside of chinatown, including elsewhere in east vancouver (e.g. kingsway st. , victoria dr. areas) , richmond. immigrants china, hong kong , taiwan began move vancouver area 1990s, concerned transfer of territory uk chinese. these immigrants wealthier previous waves of chinese immigrants , typically moved non-chinese communities in west side , elsewhere.


chinese remains dominant ethnicity in city of vancouver (about 33% of city s students learn chinese prior learning english). metro vancouver has north america’s highest percentage of residents of chinese descent (16%) , of this, 80% foreign-born.


a wave of immigrants south east asian countries (e.g. indonesia, malaysia, philippines, singapore, vietnam) has moved east vancouver since 1970s. although many of these new immigrants have since relocated city of richmond part of asia west movement. kingsway street in east vancouver has many south east asian businesses, such vietnamese restaurants, cafes , beauty shops. in 2003, 5% of vancouver s students speak vietnamese first language .
