one ju 388 survives today. ju 388l-1 reconnaissance version construction number (werknummer) 560049 eighth of series manufactured @ weser flugzeugbau s nordenham plant. parts of airframe built @ atg in altenburg , @ niedersächsische metallwerke brinckmann & mergell in hamburg-harburg. aircraft completed in 1945. captured u.s. troops in may 1945 @ junkers plant in merseburg, flown kassel/waldau.
the aircraft examined , test flown watson s whizzers , led united states army air forces (usaaf) colonel harold e. watson, part of operation lusty , believed watson himself flew in aircraft in preparation flying directly u.s. instead, on 17 june 1945 aircraft flown cherbourg, france shipped united states aboard royal navy escort carrier hms reaper other captured german aircraft detailed evaluation in u.s.
the aircraft flown freeman field in indiana evaluation, , in september 1945 made flight demonstration press. ju 388 flown 10 hours of flight tests @ wright field near dayton, ohio foreign evaluation serial number fe-4010 (later changed t2-4010). following these tests aircraft displayed @ dayton, ohio air show @ wright field in 1946 along other captured german aircraft.
on 26 september 1946, 560049 transferred orchard place airport in park ridge, illinois, near present o hare international airport. temporary storage facility vacant u.s. government-owned factory used chrysler corporation build douglas c-54. ju 388 donated smithsonian institution s national air museum on 3 january 1949 , arrived @ silver hill, maryland, storage in november 1954.
today aircraft disassembled , remains in condition, having never been stored outside. cockpit area in particularly condition , complete instruments. aircraft 1 of several unique german aircraft still awaiting restoration @ national air , space museum s paul e. garber preservation, restoration, , storage facility in silver hill, maryland, intended transferred in coming years steven f. udvar-hazy center s restoration annex of smithsonian, on dulles international airport property.
