the patent manor st. george granted col. william tangier smith in 1693 in recognition of col. smith s being mayor of tangier in africa. further patents issuing more land granted in 1697 , annexed first patent. col. smith owned homestead in setauket, new york, , there administered land on. additional patent issued col. smith in 1697, moriches patent, not annexed manor st. george. in time, northwestern section of estate known swamp or longswamp.


on col. wm. tangier smith s death in 1705, setauket estate inherited eldest surviving son, col. henry smith, , manor st. george inherited son, major william henry smith, built manor seat on mastic neck.


in or around 1718, 4,000 acres (16 km) of estate on eastern side of mastic neck acquired richard floyd, gave son nicoll. in 1755 floyd estate given son william floyd, signer of declaration of independence.


on major william henry smith s death in 1743, son judge william smith inherited manor st. george.

during american revolution, british soldiers occupied manor house on mastic neck , built fort there. possible judge smith, patriot, fled longswamp during occupation, not documented. in 1780, major benjamin tallmadge landed dragoons @ cedar beach in mt. sinai on north shore of long island , led them on march manor. raid began around 4 a.m., , americans under tallmadge captured fort relatively quickly. few british soldiers killed, americans lost none. major tallmadge s march, twenty-mile (32 km) journey, survived in form of tallmadge trail.


after american revolution

after revolutionary war, smith family returned manor. also, judge smith had house built son, gen. john smith, in longswamp. gen. smith decided not move new house, though, staying @ manor st. george. longswamp given judge smith s seventh son, william, in 1790. on july 8, 1817, longswamp handed down william smith s son, william sydney smith, changed name longwood.


throughout following time, manor st. george , longwood divided many times parts sold , parts divided amongst children of smiths.


in 1955, manor st. george set in testamentary trust eugenie annie tangier smith. in same year, longwood estate given elbert burt clayton smith of berkeley, california moved family estate immediately. burt smith donated 51 acres (0.21 km²) of estate local board of education build longwood high school, 6 acres (24,000 m) middle island presbyterian church (which moved plot in ridge, kept middle island in title), 2 acres (8,100 m) st. mark s lutheran church (which no longer exists), , several acres suffolk county greenbelt. when burt smith died in 1967, longwood bought real estate developers , destined destruction. after real estate developer, wilbur f. breslin, proposed huge residential, industrial, , commercial complex on site, public outcry enough house , 35 acres (0.14 km²) donated brookhaven town preservation in 1974.
