the area known today east cantons consists of german-speaking community , municipalities of malmedy , waimes (german: weismes), belong french community of belgium. east cantons part of rhine province of prussia in germany until 1920 (as counties (landkreise) of eupen , malmedy), annexed belgium following germany s defeat in world war , subsequent treaty of versailles. became known cantons rédimés, redeemed cantons . peace treaty of versailles demanded questioning of local population. people unwilling become belgians , wanted region remain part of germany required register along full name , address belgian military administration, headed herman baltia, , many feared reprisals or expulsion doing so.
