like other plains indian tribes utes skilled warriors specialized in horse mounted combat. war neighboring tribes fought gaining prestige, stealing horses, , revenge. prior raid warriors organize war parties made of warriors, medicine men, , war chief led party. prepare battle ute warriors fast, participate in sweat lodge ceremonies, , paint faces , horses special symbolic meanings. utes master horsemen , execute daring maneuvers on horseback while in battle. unlike other plains people ute did not have warrior societies exception of southern utes developed them late , dissolved after went onto reservations. warriors exclusively men women followed behind war parties gather loot , sing songs. women performed lame dance symbolize having pull or carry heavy loads of loot after raid. utes used variety of weapons including lances, bows, tomahawks, war clubs, , knives, rifles, shotguns, , pistols obtained through raiding or trading.


the enemies of ute included cheyenne, crow, shoshone, blackfoot, , arapaho north of ute territory. east , southeast of ute territory fought sioux, pawnee, osage, kiowa, comanche, , plains apache. west , south encountered navajo, paiute, , western shoshone. utes traded various puebloan peoples such taos , close allies jicarilla shared of same territory.
