by 21 july 1914, british had postponed delivery of reşadiye , sultan osman-ı evvel tensions flared in europe following assassination of archduke franz ferdinand on 28 june. action prompted protest djemal pasha, ottoman naval minister, via france, in hopes of securing ships delivery. transport ship carrying crews 2 battleships departed constantinople on 4 august, recalled on 7 august after ottoman government informed dreadnoughts not delivered. first lord of admiralty winston churchill ordered royal navy detain 2 ships on 29 july , prevent ottoman naval personnel boarding them; 2 days later, british sailors boarded ships , formally seized them. since britain not yet @ war, these actions illegal; british government nevertheless determined present ottomans fait accompli. on 3 august, british ambassador ottoman empire informed government britain had seized ships.


reşadiye , sultan osman-ı evvel pressed british service. reşadiye completed month , commissioned hms erin, sultan osman-ı evvel entering service hms agincourt. in september, erin joined 2nd battle squadron of grand fleet, served duration of conflict. took part in battle of jutland on 31 may & 1 june 1916. there, fourth ship in british line of battle, along 3 surviving king george v-class half-sisters. did not fire main battery during battle, british capital ship not during engagement; secondary battery fired 6 shells.


in 1917, fire control directors installed, , received flying off platforms atop forward superfiring , amidships turrets. after end of war, erin assigned nore reserve , served flagship. postwar career cut short washington naval treaty, signed in february 1922, mandated significant draw downs in naval strength signatories. royal navy had intended keep erin training ship under terms of treaty, change of plans led hms thunderer taking place training ship, meant erin had scrapped. ship sold scrap in december 1922, , subsequently broken ship breaking firm cox , daniels, finished scrapping reşadiye in 1923.
