most northeast regional trains operate on northeast corridor between boston , washington (via new york, philadelphia, , baltimore). corridor owned, in part, amtrak, massachusetts bay transportation authority (mbta), metro-north railroad (mnrr), , connecticut department of transportation (cdot).

trains turn north @ new haven serve springfield, massachusetts, operate on new haven-springfield line, wholly owned amtrak. both virginia extensions of northeast regional (newport news , lynchburg) use ex-richmond, fredericksburg , potomac railroad, csx, between washington , alexandria, virginia. alexandria, lynchburg trains use norfolk southern (ex-southern railway, ex-virginia midland railway), while newport news trains use following csx tracks:

richmond terminal subdivision
bellwood subdivision
peninsula subdivision

until around 1999 service springfield continued east boston, alternate inland route between new york , boston. 1 weekend train stayed on route until november 1, 2004, schedule.


one train, federal (twilight shoreliner until 2004), formerly carried overnight sleeper between washington , boston, giving corridor 24-hour service; federal name (briefly resurrected in 2004) no longer used, , ordinary all-coach northeast regional runs in place.


the northeast regional federally funded , receives federal funding operations between boston , washington, dc. northeast regional operations south of washington towards lynchburg , newport news funded commonwealth of virginia. new haven springfield, ma operations funded state of connecticut , commonwealth of massachusetts.
