the reproduction of foliose lichen can occur either asexually or sexually. sexual reproduction requires both fungal , photosynthetic partner. photobiont once in symbionce fungal partner not produce recognisable reproductive structures therefore fungal partner continue reproduction lichen. in order lichen reproduction take place fungal partner must produce millions of germinating spores fuse form zygote must find compatible photobiont. photobiont fuse zygote , live within fungi creating lichen. fungal partner in foliose lichen ascomytes spores called ascomata. fruiting bodies of lichen typically make 1 of 2 shapes. apothecia disk or cup shaped , produce spores on upper surface. , perithecia shaped flasks enclose spore producing layer hole @ top ( brodo, sharnoff, , sharnoff). since sexual reproduction inefficient, lichen reproduce asexually vegetative reproduction when possible. foliose lichen use isidia cylindrical finger protuberances upper cortex in algal , fungal tissue incorporated into. broken off , transported wind relocate , propagate forming new lichen (easton pg.62).
