in 1994, then-president albert j. diulio made controversial decision discontinue use of warriors nickname university s sports teams, citing growing pressure on schools end use of native american mascots. backlash alumni, donors, , students ensued, though administration , marquette community settled on nickname golden eagles. mascot controversy again boiled on in 2005 when university s leadership briefly changed nickname gold, return golden eagles week later.

during fall 2013 semester, former marquette president robert a. wild returned marquette university interim president following resignation of successor , 22nd president of marquette, scott pilarz. dr. michael r. lovell, former chancellor of university of wisconsin–milwaukee, took on president on july 1, 2014, following wild s interim term. lovell first layperson serve marquette s president, previous presidents of university catholic clergymen.

on may 16, 1968, african-american students withdrew marquette university in protest against called “institutional racism.” students demanded immediate hiring of african-american administrator. rally @ student union culminated in arrest of 7 people refused leave building after closing. on may 17, marquette moved toward hiring of african-american administrator end campus protest.


in april 2010, marquette university offered position dean of college of arts , sciences jodi o brien, openly lesbian professor @ jesuit university, seattle university. on may 2, marquette rescinded offer on concerns scholarly writing related catholic teaching. o brien had published works on lesbian sex , same-sex marriage. several faculty members @ marquette said decision raised concerns academic freedom. faculty , students both universities protested marquette s decision.


on june 21, 2011, 19-year-old marquette student reported being raped athlete. no report taken university officers , city police not notified. marquette university acknowledged failing notify police violation of state law , university had ignored reporting obligations 10 years. in @ least 2 cases, lapse played role in prosecutors declining press charges. marquette had held administrative hearing on sexual assault allegation in january 2011. however, time report filed police, time had elapsed conduct proper investigation. in 2016, independent research state of education deemed marquette university least sexually healthy college in nation.
