after allied landings @ syracuse, sicily division positions considered untenable , retreated centre of island link 26th mountain infantry division assietta. division badly mauled army troops during battle of troina 1–6 august 1943 in north of island. during 1 italian counterattack, lieutenant-colonel giuseppe gianquinto s 1st battalion, 5th regiment of aosta managed take 40 american prisoners. remnants of division evacuated trento in mainland italy between 9 , 12 august 1943. after armistice between italy , allied armed forces of 8 september 1943 division disbanded german forces.
on 20 september 1944 aosta raised again part of italian co-belligerent army. new unit named aosta internal security division , consisted of iii , iv internal security brigades. has moved sicily in november, 1944, , stayed there until end of war.
