the term zoomorphic, or animal style, refers palette being made in shape of animal portrayed. examples of similar shaped pieces made in pottery, drilled stone bowls in zoomorphic shape. animal shapes common in prehistory of iranian regions.


examples of animal types represented turtles, fish, hippopotami, crocodiles, ducks, , elephants


many examples feature shell-inlays representing eyes of animal. other details of animal, such fins on fish, commonly depicted incisions. palettes contain suspension holes. in naqada ii period centre of these zoomorphic palettes left free of decoration facilitate functional use of object. examples feature worn down , damaged centres, staining pigment, due long history of use, possibly on several generations. appears zoomorphic palette type followed creation of rhomboidal cosmetic palette type.
