written , illustrated yuu watase, fushigi yûgi appeared in serial form in monthly manga magazine shōjo comic. premiered in may 1992 issue , ran on 4 years, final chapter appearing in june 1996 issue. series simultaneously published in eighteen collected volumes shogakukan, new volumes being released on quarterly schedule.
in 1992, viz media licensed manga english language release in north america. series released in flipped trade paperback format, starting in august 1998. several characters have both japanese pronunciations , chinese pronunciations. in 1998 watase visited united states , met viz staff members @ san francisco headquarters. viz kept original chinese names of characters @ request of watase. bill flanagan, editor of english version, asked watase if should use chinese names popular characters such tai yi-jun (taitsukun) , asked chinese names used there. characters names remaining in japanese in english version characters such tamahome have japanese pronunciations of ancient constellations; there never intention of them having chinese names.
this caused confusion fans anime version uses japanese names. example, in manga, hotohori s country named hong-nan rather konan found in anime series. after 8 volumes, viz stopped publication of fushigi yûgi, reviving in june 2003 when released first 2 volumes in unflipped standard manga size volumes. remaining volumes released on quarterly schedule, including remaining ten volumes. final volume of series released in april 2006. dates , isbn numbers given first 8 volumes in table on link above second edition releases.
viz serialized fushigi yûgi in manga anthology magazine, animerica extra, starting october 1998 debut issue , running until december 2004 issue, magazine s final issue. in january 2009, viz slated re-release series part of vizbig line, combines 2 or 3 individual volumes of original release single, larger volume.

produced studio pierrot, fifty-two episode fushigi yûgi anime series premiered on animax , tv tokyo on april 6, 1995. series aired weekly, until final episode aired on march 28, 1996. series licensed english-language release region 1 dvd , vhs format geneon entertainment, named pioneer, under expanded title fushigi yûgi: mysterious play. has been suggested geneon chose license series based on popularity among fansub community. main series released in 8 individual volumes , 2 box sets, suzaku , seiryū sets. media blasters license-rescued series, , released first season dvd on june 19, 2012. season 2 released on february 12, 2013.
original video animations
following anime adaptation 3 original video animation (ova) works appeared. first, spanning 3 episodes, takes place year after events of main series , has no ties original manga. released dvd on october 25, 1996. second ova, has 6 episodes, animates last 4 volumes of manga series had been left out of main series. episodes split across 2 volumes, first released may 25, 1997, , second coming on year later on august 25, 1998.
the final ova, fushigi yûgi eikoden, spans 4 episodes , based on 2 of light novels written megumi nishizaki. released on december 21, 2001, focuses on new character, mayo sakaki, sixteen-year-old girl attends yotsubadai high school. upon finding universe of 4 gods in trash bin @ park, mayo discovers story remains incomplete. in unfamiliar world of book, mayo must come terms own life , unhappiness within it.
geneon entertainment licensed ovas region 1 dvd release. first 2 ovas released in set titled fushigi yûgi: mysterious play ova . fushigi yûgi eikoden released single disc volume. ovas released similar packaging main series, give them consistent look. 3 ova series have been re-licensed media blasters.
novels
over series of 5 years, megumi nishizaki wrote thirteen japanese light novels based on fushigi yûgi. illustrated yuu watase, fushigi yûgi gaiden explores lives various celestial warriors before seen in manga. 2 novels set after manga, eikō den (jōkan) , eikō den (gekan), later became basis third fushigi yûgi original video animation, fushigi yûgi eikoden. published shogakukan, none of novels have been licensed english release.

idea factory released sony playstation 2 video game based on fushigi yûgi series called fushigi yûgi: suzaku ibun (ふしぎ遊戯 朱雀異聞). released in japan on may 29, 2008 on playstation 2, , available in regular , limited editions.
