northern ute tribe (uinta utes)
yapudttka (yampadttka, yamparka, yamparika, lived in yampa river valley , adjacent regions, known today white river utes or yamparika utes)
pahdteeahnooch (pahdteechnooch, parianuc, parianuche, later called uncompahgre, lived along grand river in colorado , utah, known today grand river utes or parianuche utes)
taveewach (taviwach, taviwac, tabeguache, later called uncompahgre, lived in river valleys of gunnison river , uncompahgre river, in elk mountains west toward city of grand junction, known today taviwach utes)

timpanogos (tumpanuwac, tumpanawach, toompahnahwach - ‘fish-eaters’ - because utah lake pristine, notable fresh water fishery @ time - called tumpipanogo or timanogot, in spanish called lagunas - ‘lake people’ , come pescados - ‘fish-eaters.’ known today timpanogos utes). formerly lived in wasatch range around mount timpanogos, along southern , eastern shores of utah lake of utah valley, , in heber valley, uinta basin , sanpete valley. utilized river canyons of spanish fork, diamond fork, hobble creek, american fork , provo river. commonly listed historically group encountered dominguez , escalante expedition while in central utah, , later, known tribe under famed chief walkar or walkara before moving uintah reservation join utes. based on names , words used, not clear whether culturally southern numic people, along rest of utes, or whether might have been central numic, , possibly shoshonean group. shoshone, utes , paiutes did share common genetic, cultural , linguistic heritage part of numic branch of uto-aztecan language family, , joined, separated or mixed @ various times.
sahpeech (sanpeech, sanpits, san-pitch lived in sanpete valley , sevier river valley , along san pitch river. today known san pitch utes) might have been shoshonean, , considered part of timpanog tribe, before joining utes on uintah reservation. called utahs or utah indian tribe in reports indian affairs commissioners. “the tribes , fragments of tribes whom had business relations... follows, wit: on second day of december last visited san-pitch, principal chief of utahs, , few of men... famous chiefs included chief aropeen , chief sanpitch, whom sanpete county, utah named.
pahvant - lived west of wasatch range in pavant range towards nevada border along sevier river in desert around sevier lake , fish lake, therefore called pahvant - ‘living near water’. in way of living resembled neighbors, kaibab paiute, , intermarried sahyehpeech neighboring goshute , paiute. known in past pahvant utes, today absorbed paiute indian tribe of utah. tribe noted bearded indians contacted dominguez , escalante expedition.
yoowetum (yoovwetuh, uinta-at, later called tavaputs, lived in uintah basin, uinta mountains, including utah lake , great salt lake, along strawberry river in west , tavaputs plateau in green river-colorado river-system in east, known today uinta-ats utes)
sahyehpeech (sheberetch, lived in vicinity of today moab, had no direct contact europeans until 1850 mormons penetrated territory, 1870 war , disease decimated sahyehpeech joined other ute bands, known today sheberetch utes)
moanunts (moanumts, lived in upper sevier river valley in central utah, in otter creek region south of salina , in vicinity of fish lake, today absorbed paiute indian tribe of utah)
southern ute tribe
capote band of utes (kapota, kahpota) lived east of great divide south of conejos river , east of rio grande towards west site of sangre de cristo mountains, living in san luis valley, along headwaters of rio grande , along animas river, centered in vicinity of today chama , tierra amarilla of rio arriba county. mahgrahch kahpota maintained trade relations puebloan peoples , came conflict southern plains people because of alliance ollero band of jicarilla apache.
muache band of utes (mouache, mahgruhch, mahgrahch, muwac) lived along eastern foothills of rocky mountains denver, colorado in north las vegas, new mexico in south, traded northern puebloan peoples, taos pueblo, therefore called taos-ute, ranged after adoption of horse allies, llanero band of jicarilla apache, southeastward far texas panhandle.

the weminuche band of utes ( weeminuche , weemeenooch, wiminuc, guiguinuches) lived west of great divide along dolores river of western colorado, in abajo mountains, in valley of san juan river , northern tributaries , in san juan mountains including mesas , plateaus of eastern utah.
