the hong kong maritime museum renovated central pier 8 in 2012. until time building used 1 of terminals star ferry service hung hom. east side of pier had been used non-scheduled ferry services. in august 2007 pier s unused spaces under tender restaurants , kiosks. museum submitted proposal converting pier use museum. proposal submitted in october 2007 , accepted government. following 3 years saw intensive period of consultation between hkmm , government during museum s initial design proposals dr stephen davies, museum s director @ time , hkmm s original murray house architects richards basmajian refined. final design of museum premises outcome of main consultants appointed project, p&t architects , engineers, gallery design , fit-out haley sharpe designs (uk) , kingsmen.


the renovation projects represents partnership hong kong government , many of hong kong s maritime community. move allows museum expand gallery spaces fifteen additional 2 galleries special exhibitions , hosting special events. museum have café, due open in mid-2013, host hong kong s second cafe scientifique.
