U.S. House of Representatives Alan Lowenthal
on november 6, 2012, lowenthal elected u.s. house of representatives newly created 47th district after defeating republican gary delong. although delong carried orange county portion of district 54 percent of vote, lowenthal swamped him in los angeles county portion on 38,000 votes, more actual margin of 30,100 votes. took office on january 3, 2013. first non-hispanic democrat represent significant portion of traditionally heavily republican orange county in congress since jerry m. patterson, served 1975 1985. in of orange county portion of district, elected white democrat above county level. however, los angeles county portion has more double population of orange county portion.
lowenthal reelected in 2014 similar margin.
