in september 2016, adelaide took part in exercise kakadu 2016, based @ darwin, northern territory.
on 12 december 2016, adelaide intercepted 50m former japanese whaling vessel kaiyo maru no. 8 in international waters in southern ocean south east of tasmania. vessel had attracted attention of maritime border command after loitering , circling more 200 nautical miles off southern coast of australia. tactical assault group personnel boarded vessel , located suspected illicit drugs after vessel escorted hobart approximately 186 kilograms of cocaine located on board. vessel loitering after botched rendezvous 300 nautical miles off coast of port fairy in victoria.
in september 2017, adelaide sailed part of largest australian task group deploy since 1980s on exercise indo-pacific endeavour 2017. planned series of exercises nations around pacific rim testing communications, disaster relief plans , regional security. adelaide accompanied hmas sirius , varying number of escorts, total of 4 frigates (melbourne, darwin, toowoomba , parramatta) sailing sydney on 4 september. last time such large deployment of australian warships went sea september 1980, led aircraft carrier hmas melbourne.
