the project authorized in 1954 , imagined greatest nondefense construction project in history of western civilization. city determined needed third water tunnel tunnels 1 , 2 closed inspection , repairs. stage 1 construction of tunnel 3 began in 1970 , completed in 1993. portion put service in 1998 , cost $1 billion.


this first section bored through bedrock between 250 , 800 feet (76 , 244 m) underground, using drilling , blasting techniques. section 1 13 miles (21 km) long , starts @ hillview reservoir in yonkers, new york crosses under central park in manhattan, reach fifth avenue @ 78th street. there runs under east river , roosevelt island astoria, queens. concrete-lined tunnel 24 feet (7.3 m) in diameter , reduces 20 feet (6.1 m) in diameter before connecting 14 vertical shafts.


two

stage 2 built using tunnel boring machines , comprises 2 sections. brooklyn , queens section runs 5.5 miles (8.9 km) , begins in red hook, brooklyn, connects richmond tunnel staten island. passes through park slope, bedford-stuyvesant , bushwick before reaching maspeth, queens. maspeth runs through woodside , astoria, connects end of stage 1 section. brooklyn section 16 feet (4.9 m) in diameter, , queens section 20 feet (6.1 m).


the manhattan section 10 feet (3.0 m) in diameter , runs 9 miles (14 km). begins @ valve chamber in central park, runs south along west side of manhattan, , curves around southern end of island come partway through lower east side. spur of manhattan tunnel begins on west side @ approximately 34th street, goes east side , turns north under second avenue 59th street. tunnel completed in 2008, , after construction of riser shafts completed, tunnel opened in 2013.

what used called stage 3 being referred separate project, kensico-city tunnel. 24 feet (7.3 m) in diameter, running kensico reservoir in westchester van cortlandt valve chamber complex in bronx.

stage 4 proposed tunnel start @ hillview reservoir, pass through eastern bronx , through queens, meet stage 2 section.
