19th century

in 1870s, ministry of justice established own law school. western legal concepts, including of human rights, introduced japan distinguished foreign scholars engaged ministry. founders of kansai law school had studied @ law school, under french jurist boissonade de fontarabie. idea of individual rights , legal processes independent of central governmental control new japan. long after conclusion of study dr. boissonade, founders continued feel these concepts vital new japan. saw duty popularize jurisprudence spread throughout nation 2 notions: of independent judiciary , of human rights.

20th century

in 1905 institution renamed private kansai university , in 1920 kansai university before in 1922 being granted official status of university. in 1922 main campus moved present more extensive site in suita (a suburb of osaka), paving way later growth. in consequence of educational reforms carried out after end of second world war, kansai university able avail of new system expand scope tuition comprise 4 faculties: of law, letters, economics , commerce.

its first graduate school established in 1950. faculty of engineering founded in 1958, followed in 1967 founding of faculty of sociology. in 1994 in response requirements of modern technology , communication, informatics faculty instituted on campus, created outside dormitory-town of takatsuki. institute of foreign language education , research inaugurated in 2000.

for many decades, evening courses taught on separate campus, in tenroku area of osaka. these constituted night school students, many of them working adults. in 1994 evening course moved senriyama campus; in 2003, university instituted innovative 12-hour curriculum, integrating both day , evening courses.

21st century

thus, @ present, kansai university offers 7 faculties in undergraduate day school , 5 faculties (engineering , informatics being exceptions) in undergraduate evening school; offers graduate studies in 7 faculties, plus independent graduate school staffed members of institute of foreign language education , research.

the university, attached senior , junior high schools , kindergarten, has total student body of 27,000. in 2016, kansai university celebrated 130th anniversary of foundation.

the university made news in 2016 announcing prohibit researchers applying ministry of defense grants projects diverted military technologies, on grounds researchers cannot involved in activities counter peace , welfare of human beings.
