when colonial secretary, , went him on eastern tour, included constantinople, athens, , of islands in greek archipelago. mr. chamberlain asked gerard van helden , invitation accepted ten weeks lasted. went south africa mr. chamberlain in late 1890s. in 1898 superintendent van helden continued based in detectives office, corporation st. birmingham. in late 1890s gerard van helden turned attention towards prominent bogus company promoter later charged negotiating many worthless cheques. testament memory recognising faces prisoner concerned in case in court offence , recognised gerard van helden in court on case had arrested twenty years previously. in 1898 offered retirement pension elected keep working.


in spring , summer of 1901, gerard van helden undertook gruelling journey ireland , north , west of england on behalf of force. on journey home birmingham taken ill on train , doctor sent on arrival home. ordered bed condition deteriorated , died few days later.
