the first known bishop of present-day albania bassus, made bishop of scutari (shkodër) in 387, suffragan bishop of thessaloniki, primate of illyricum. in 6th century, shkodër became suffrage of ohrid, in present-day republic of macedonia, made primate of illyricum, , middle ages, shkodër suffrage of bishop of duklja, in present-day montenegro. in 1867 shkodër united archdiocese of antivari (bar, montenegro), split in 1886, become separate archdiocese once again suffragan bishops in lezhë, sapë , pult. diocese of pult (pulati) - region north of shkodër between present day villages of drisht , prekal - dates 899, when bishop of pult appointed suffragan bishop of duklja. diocese once divided greater pult , lesser pult merged shkodër in 2005. drisht, village north of shkodër, used separate bishopric. diocese of sapë (sappa) - covering region of zadrima between shkodër , lezhë - dates 1062, , of lezhë (alessio) 14th century. archdiocese of durrës created in 13th century, bishopric of albanopolis. united tirana in 1992. diocese of rrëshen split off in 1996.
