hore s ornamental canal work @ shaw house largely filled in 1970s, when a339 road built. southern end of canal levelled, although depression in ground beside river lambourn path shows position of north end of canal.


in 1953 work engineers of english river navigations 1620–1760 newcomen society journal, sir alec skempton described hore in first rank among navigation engineers . in hutchinson chronology of world history, hore s work on kennet described [setting] new standard inland waterways, , important forerunner of canals of industrial revolution .


despite praise hore s work on waterways, william fordyce mavor recognised 1810s—when rennie s canal completed—hore s name , association navigations had disappeared oblivion . mavor stated hore s legacy needed rescuing, noting had adopted , executed navigation, of [mavor believed] there existed no model in england .
