they founded in 1928, in similar manner sheffield united, liverpool, new brighton tower , nearby chelsea: play on ground had no football club in residence. in thames case, formed group of businessmen had built west ham stadium, capacity of 120,000, in custom house area of essex (now part of london borough of newham in greater london); stadium used greyhound , speedway racing took place during week, leaving saturdays free. directors of stadium decided form professional football club play on saturdays, bring in additional revenue stadium.


the club began playing in southern league eastern division, , finished 14th in first season , third in season after (1929–30). enough them gain election football league third division south in summer of 1930, in place of merthyr town. request join league considered alongside applications york city, connah s quay, mansfield town , prescot cables. success of application required them upgrade quality of team. achieve objective, newly promoted club placed advert first class players wanted. positions in june edition of athletic news. thames continued field reserve side in southern league single further season, before withdrawing entirely in 1931.

unable compete established teams nearby, such charlton athletic, clapton orient, millwall , west ham united, thames struggled. december 1931, club under severe financial pressure. keep club afloat, players agreed take pay cut. finished 20th out of 22 clubs in 1930–31, , 22nd (i.e., bottom) following season (1931–32). prompted club directors decision not seek re-election league following season , wind club, despite approach clapton orient merge 2 clubs. replaced aldershot.


thames afc should not confused thames ironworks fc, club had predated them on 30 years, , go on renamed west ham united.
