season summary



the 1943–44 season began on saturday 4 september 1943.

as in previous season, there still 3 lancashire clubs have not had close down , withdrawn league. northern rugby league continued single (now) 16 club single competition. clubs still playing different number of marches, league positions , title decided on percentage basis...

at completion of regular season wakefield trinity on top of league on both points , percentage success (with 38 points 22 games , percentage success of 86.36%), , wigan second (34 points 21 games @ 80.95%). of 2017, occasion wakefield trinity have finished top of league.

hunslet , barrow finished mid-table 8th , 9th respectively in first season after earlier withdrawal.

st helens, second consecutive season, finished bottom (16th out of 16 clubs) 1 wins 21 , 2 points.

wigan beat dewsbury 25-14 on aggregate in 2 legged play-off final. , win championship (for second consecutive season).

the wartime emergency league did not count official league championship.

in final of rugby league challenge cup, bradford northern beat wigan 8-3 on aggregate on 2 legs in front of aggregate crowd of 52,000.

the lancashire county cup, suspended season 1940–41 remained rest of war , again wigan competed in yorkshire cup.

in final of yorkshire county cup, bradford northern beat keighley in 2 low scoring legs 10-7 on aggregate before aggregate crowd of 19,244.

the following clubs had withdrawn league, before 1943–44 seasons completion began :- st helens recs – folded before war started

hull kingston rovers – withdrew after end of first (1939–40) season finished , did not re-join until 1945–46 season.

rochdale hornets – hull kingston rovers.

widnes – hull kingston rovers.

broughton rangers – withdrew after end of second 1940–41 season finished , did not re-join until 1945–46 season.

liverpool stanley – broughton rangers.

salford – broughton rangers.

swinton – broughton rangers.

warrington – broughton rangers.

leigh - during second world war, club forced leave ground adjacent cable factory extended onto land. townsfolk of leigh, acting on chairman james hilton s inspiration, cleared fields on edge of town, , built new stadium, including moving , rebuilding old grandstand original ground. -

in 1941–42, leigh quit wartime lancashire league , not return league until 1946–47 when played temporary measure @ athletic ground, holden road before moving kirkhall lane (which later officially renamed hilton park after james hilton. -

bramley – withdrew after end of third 1941–42 season finished , did not re-join until 1945–46 season.

castleford – withdrew after end of third 1941–42 season finished , did not participate 2 seasons, re-joining 1944–45 season.

dewsbury had relatively successful time during war years. managed eddie waring, , side boosted inclusion of number of big-name guest players, club won wartime emergency league in 1941–42 , again following season 1942–43 (though championship declared null , void when discovered had played ineligible player). runners-up in championship in 1943–44, challenge cup winners in 1942–43 , yorkshire cup final appearances in season 1940–41 , winners in 1942–43.
