the break-up of pangaea characterised start of formation of pelotas basin in south atlantic, forming @ same time namibia basin in africa.


the basins of south atlantic margin started forming in cretaceous break-up of gondwana, southern part of former supercontinent pangea. tectonic movement resulted in sequence of rift basins bordering present-day south atlantic on brazilian , southwestern african sides. pelotas-namibia spreading commenced in hauterivian, around 133 million years ago, , reached santos basin north in barremian. seafloor spreading continued northwards campos basin in albian, @ approximately 112 ma.


five tectonic stages have been identified in brazilian basins:



while basins north of pelotas basin, santos, campos , espírito santo basins, characterised thick sequence of salt , accompanying pre-salt layer, evaporites absent in pelotas basin.
