the dawn of love (under original title of venus wakes, , wakens love) exhibited in 1829 @ birmingham society of arts, other history during etty s lifetime not recorded. no record of original sale exists, , not among 133 paintings included in major retrospective exhibition of etty s works @ royal society of arts in 1849. known in 1835 in collection of textile entrepreneur joseph strutt, not among paintings sold on death in 1844. in june 1889 bought unknown buyer unknown sum sir merton russell-cotes, , has remained in collection of russell-cotes art gallery & museum in bournemouth ever since. shown @ 1899 exhibition of works russell-cotes s collection @ glasgow corporation gallery. exhibition caused controversy owing supposed obscene nature; in 1894 number of supposedly obscene prints of works major artists had been removed glasgow shop police , magistrates, , felt inappropriate publicly funded educational body displaying work of equal obscenity. several luminaries of art world such frederic leighton intervened, , exhibition went ahead. dawn of love exhibited @ 1955 arts council exhibition, , 1 of works exhibited in major retrospective of etty s works @ york art gallery in 2011–12.
