a disturbance developed within intertropical convergence zone on june 17 , remained distinct on track west. area of low pressure developed in association system on northwestern caribbean on june 24 , further organized tropical depression 18:00 utc following day, supported data reconnaissance aircraft. steered west , west-northwest expansive ridge across bahamas , gulf of mexico, depression intensified tropical storm alex 06:00 utc on june 26 , attained initial peak winds of 65 mph (100 km/h) before moving ashore near belize city, belize several hours later. alex maintained tropical storm intensity crossed yucatan peninsula, , upon executing northward turn , second westward bend, began steadily intensify. cyclone intensified season s first hurricane @ 00:00 utc on june 30 , attained peak winds of 110 mph (175 km/h) made landfall near soto la marina, mexico, @ 02:00 utc on july 1. once inland, alex turned west-southwest , rapidly weakened on mountainous terrain of mexico. dissipated 06:00 utc on july 2.


the precursor disturbance alex flooded hundreds of homes , prompted evacuation of thousands of residents in dominican republic. damage crops , hundreds of structures occurred across central america. in southern mexico, torrential rainfall led numerous landslides , mudslides, while swollen rivers flooded many homes , roads collapsed. near track of alex in northern mexico, rainfall reached high 35.04 in (890 mm) in monterrey, 13-foot (4.0 m) waves affected coastline, hundreds of thousands of citizens lost power, , widespread infrastructure damaged or destroyed. although hurricane did not directly move ashore coastline of united states, spiral bands produced tropical storm-force sustained winds across southern reaches of texas, peaking @ 51 mph (82 km/h) in port isabel. heavy rainfall broke accumulation records, storm surge of @ least 3.5 ft (1.1 m) caused beach erosion, , embedded supercells produced 9 tornadoes (all rated ef0). along track, alex responsible 51 deaths (22 missing) , $1.89 billion in damage.
