History Interstate 405 (Washington)
the first road connecting of eastside communities, secondary state highway 2a (ssh 2a), in existence since @ least 1927. ssh 2a connected us 10 , us 410 in renton north, through kirkland , bothell, connecting us 99 in everett. in 1964, system of primary , secondary state highways removed in favor of signed routes, , psh 2a renumbered sr 405. first segment of interstate completed between tukwila , renton, opening traffic on august 31, 1965. 1971, sr 405 renumbered interstate 405 after improved interstate highway standards.
one of major construction projects on highway straightening s-curves in renton. project began in 1990, , estimated cost $70 million. during time portion of highway between i-5 , south renton being repaved , hov lanes being added.
on september 27, 2015, set of high-occupancy toll lanes (hot lanes) opened on i-405 between bellevue , lynnwood, replacing existing hov lanes ne 6th street i-5/sr 525.
