hugh hughie munro (1861 – 2 june 1925) trainer w. r. wilson @ whittington, victoria, st albans stud, managed c. leslie macdonald. hugh trained revenue, winner of 1901 melbourne cup; had wakeful, champion mare ran second in 1903, , 7 other placegetters in melbourne cup. munro had ambitions 2 younger sons, jim , darby, land big event. see jim run second on rivoli in 1923, died before made great win on windbag in 1925, , statesman 3 years later. hugh munro believed youngest son darby, lad knew how sit on horse, 1 day become 1 of australia s notable riders. darby win cup on peter pan in 1934.

jack munro

john frederick jack munro ( – 1959 or earlier) a.r.c.-licensed trainer, based @ warwick farm , racing stables @ liverpool. among racehorses trained were: contrast; coinash; la gloria; allunga; 1935 *a.j.c. derby/australian derby; correct; karingal. in may 1939 munro , jockey h. hughes disqualified 12 months after stewards considered grand hotel had not been allowed run on merits . on appeal ban lifted.


he in 1944 licensee of cootamundra hotel in cootamundra, later new zealand hotel @ bottom of william street, sydney.


jimmie munro

james leslie jim jimmie munro (7 september 1906 – 24 july 1974) born in caulfield, victoria, , recognised dick wootton , william kelso talented rider when quite young, , rode father, completing apprenticeship jockey e. f. walker (c. 1884–1946), randwick, new south wales, trainer. had first melbourne cup ride @ age 15, in 1923 second on rivoli; in 1926 won on windbag , again in 1928 on statesman. first big win 1922 sydney cup on prince charles, owned john brown. won many other major races in melbourne , sydney during 1920s: on valicare in doncaster, boaster in epsom , leslie wallace in sires produce stakes. in 1927 disqualified year following ride on gelding songift @ canterbury on 18 june, along horse, trainer s. b. kelly , parkes bookmaker j. leech, majority decision of committee following irregular betting , horse failing @ final stretch, though end never made clear. not first time came attention of stewards: in 1923 had month s suspension interference in hawksburn handicap. suspended again, in april 1929 1 month, following complaint of interference jockey h. birmingham , subsequent altercation in jockeys room. these incidents had little effect on munro s career: rode phar lap in rosehill guineas on 21 september 1929, 1 of great gelding s earliest wins (his first rosehill maiden juvenile handicap, 27 april 1929). notable wins include:

he returned australia following year, in 1934 accepted invitation ride in india, although meant forgoing promised ride on peter pan in year s melbourne cup. trainer frank mcgrath chose brother darby suitable replacement, ensuring rider s place in cup history.


he returned australia, having increasing difficulty in keeping weight down, quit racing training, , had success tel asur , opulent 1952 sydney cup. spent time in england daughter had married g. lewis, english jockey.

david hugh darby demon brown bomber munro (5 march 1913 – 3 april 1966) born in caulfield. educated @ marist brothers college, randwick, , served apprenticeship jockey brother john. account, munro born on 23 march 1913 in melbourne grew in sydney, , discovered prominent randwick trainer jeremiah jerome carey (c. 1867 – 6 february 1952), , in 1925 or 1926 taken melbourne gained experience riding carey s horse bicolor. same article asserts darby got jockey s ticket father s apprentice, first race on carey s karuma in tattersall s two-year-old handicap on 21 may 1927, , beaten horse named rosso. munro came prominence in may 1927 when won prospect handicap on release, beating famous brother jim on quixotic. later same day won may handicap on spring days. services in demand such famous trainers jackson jack holt wizard of mordialloc (c. 1880–1951), bailey payten (c. 1896 – 9 september 1948), , peter riddle (c. 1885 – 29 june 1947).

munro noted vigorous riding, in tight finish. unlike many other outstanding jockeys, not interested in golf, kept him self fit riding , swimming, exercise enjoyed, , never dieted keep weight down, though did have problem later on. though daring , energetic, seldom fell mount, , never injured.


he on several occasions invited ride in england, declined, preferring remain in australia. renowned stony poker face, may have contributed ambivalent attitude of public towards him: cheering wins , booing failures. many fans may have considered him australia s greatest jockey, no-one have denied colourful.



later years

he appeared in cameo himself in 1941 comedy film racing luck.


in february 1941 licence revoked 6 months after race @ ascot. enlisted second aif in 1942 , served until 1944 when discharged medically unfit. ride on vagabond @ caulfield resulted in two-year disqualification. application permit ride in england in 1953 refused, made appearances in california , france year. retired in 1955. in later years suffered diabetes , in 1964 left leg had amputated. died cerebral haemorrhage , remains buried in catholic section of randwick cemetery.
