abbas born in herat (now in afghanistan, 1 of 2 chief cities of khorasan) third son of royal prince mohammad khodabanda , wife khayr al-nisa begum (known mahd-i ulya ), daughter of marashi ruler of mazandaran province, claimed descent fourth shi imam zayn al-abidin. @ time of birth, abbas grandfather shah tahmasp shah of iran. abbas parents gave him nursed khani khan khanum, mother of governor of herat, ali qoli khan shamlu. when abbas four, tahmasp sent abbas father stay in shiraz climate better fragile health. tradition dictated @ least 1 prince of royal blood had reside in khorasan, tahmasp appointed abbas nominal governor of province, despite young age, , abbas left behind in herat.


in 1578, abbas father became shah of iran. abbas mother came dominate government, had little time abbas, preferring promote interests of elder brother hamza. queen consort antagonised leaders of powerful qizilbash army, plotted against , murdered on 26 july 1579, reportedly having affair adil giray, brother of crimean tatar khan held captive in qazvin. mohammad weak sovereign, incapable of preventing iran s main rivals, ottoman empire, uzbeks, invading country or stopping factional feuding among qizilbash. young prince, hamza, more promising , led campaign against ottomans, murdered suspiciously in 1586. attention turned abbas.


at age of 14, abbas had come under guardianship of murshid qoli khan, 1 of qizilbash leaders in khorasan. when large uzbek army invaded khorasan in 1587, murshid decided time right overthrow shah mohammad. rode safavid capital qazvin young prince , pronounced him king on 16 october 1587. mohammad made no objection against deposition , handed royal insignia on son during following year on 1 october 1588. abbas 17 years old.
