formation , line-up

joe shrewsbury in 2009

the band formed in 2001 three-piece, consisting of joe shrewsbury, paul wolinski, , iain armstrong. line-up of band has changed since initial formation feedle (graham clarke), fellow member of tefosav collective, joining in march 2003, playing part in writing band s first single fall of math, retreat! retreat! , drummer rob jones making band five-piece before departure of armstrong in may , feedle in july 2003. time of release of debut ep stumble.stop.repeat in december 2003, gareth hughes had been recruited on bass, increasing band 4 members. gareth left around time of release of debut album fall of math. simon wright took on over bass duties. members of other bands, particularly mirimar disaster , youthmovies, join them in live shows.

in days band known 65*daysofstatic, though version (with asterisk) never used on release. origin of name unclear, band once stating took name unreleased john carpenter film called stealth bomber, starring kurt russell, had formed create soundtrack to. however, lack of further information regarding film s existence makes unlikely. other theories include band took name cia s 1954 guatemalan coup d état during cia put white book instrument use according 65 days of disabling communication systems of nation while spreading propaganda enough overthrow country, or, put forward new statesman, name derived psychological experiments conducted in 1950s 1960s, in found exposure 65 days of white noise (or static) render listener insane.

recorded @ 2fly studios in sheffield in 4 days début full-length release released on 20 september 2004, considerable critical praise. promote album, band released single, retreat! retreat! in november 2004, , embarked on 2 tours, firstly around time of release , again in january , february 2005. second ep, hole, released in march 2005, title-track taken fall of math , band toured again in april , june of year, latter tour seeing band play new material.

one time time

during summer of 2005 band returned studio, intending write ep follow-up fall of math. however, resulting tracks released second album in october 2005. @ same time band released dvd, third release in unreleased/unreleasable series, entitled volume 3: kids have eyes. dvd final release on dustpunk records. promote album, 65 embarked on uk tour in october, fourth of year, support again ymss.

although radio protector track released single, promotional video made drove through ghosts here . video made medlo, long-time collaborators, , lord bunn, artist responsible many of t-shirt designs.

radio protector

radio protector track 1 time time issued single. released on 7 in february 2006, limited 1500 numbered copies, first 1000 having unique polaroid picture artwork. remaining 500 have digital copy of thousandth picture artwork. error in numbering meant each record denoted being x of 3000 instead of 1500. band auctioned off copy numbered 1/3000 on ebay, proceeds going friends of earth. further uk tour, entitled radio protector tour , coincided release. tour sandwiched between further dates band supported hundred reasons.

after touring of 2006, 65 returned studio in december record third lp. recording completed shortly before christmas, mixing taking place in january 2007. destruction of small ideas, released on 30 april 2007. album features contributions members of mirimar disaster, digitonal, , circle takes square. track don t go down sorrow released single 3 weeks before on 9 april, backed new song morning in knife quarter , remix of major cities of world being destroyed 1 one monsters , version of appeared b-side on retreat! retreat! single. single released on 21 march 2007 in japan, while album released there on 23 april. video single made medlo.

an ep, distant , mechanised glow of eastern european dance parties, released on 7 april 2008, containing 4 new tracks, 2 being alternate versions of title track, taken 2007 album destruction of small ideas. arg launched promote release, while band played first uk shows 6 months.

in 2005, remixed alkaline trio s single burn album crimson. track appears on 1 7 vinyl out of set of 2. in same year, band remixed ...spooks horse , track youthmovie soundtrack strategies, inclusion on reissue of debut album, hurrah! year, surely 1 better last; inexorable march of progress lead happiness.

the band embarked on short tour of uk , mainland europe in support of ep april, during break between cure s european , american tours, in main support act.

in may , june 2008 supported cure on north american tour (a tour re-arranged 2007). live album, escape new york, released on 20 april 2009 in uk , 18 august 2009 in us, featuring recordings madison square gardens , radio city music hall gigs. small tour around uk demonstrate new material started in april 2009, followed european tour.

65daysofstatic s music used score first radio adaptation of kurt vonnegut s novel slaughterhouse-five. adaptation broadcast on 20 september 2009 bbc radio 3 , 15 february 2010 on radio 4.

we exploding anyway

the band took 7 days record material fourth album, exploding anyway, released in april 2010. japan-only maxi-single, weak4 , released prior album launch. first reviews of album state band going further away post-rock sound of beginning , turning toward electronic style, using more synthesizer , less electric guitar , live drums.

heavy sky ep

it announced in late 2010 there release band, entitled heavy sky ep. release contains other recordings exploding sessions hadn t found place on album, cut down edit of tiger girl . ep made available pre-order in number of bundles, ranging album super-deluxe package including exclusive merchandise. in january 2011 released japanese version including wordless version of come me , alternative version of wrong shape , new track, string loop . in july 2012 announced deluxe version of exploding anyway / heavy sky released in australia through bird s robe records, featuring additional tracks memorydress , after san francisco new remix of tiger girl australian instrumental group sleepmakeswaves.

silent running

in july 2011, band announced intention fund studio recording of silent running soundtrack raising $7500 through crowd-funding website indie gogo. end of funding period had raised on $27,000. silent running released in mid-november 2011 numbered, limited edition vinyl lp indie gogo funders had paid option, , digital download band s website.

wild light

on 30 july 2013, band announced via vimeo sixth album titled wild light, release scheduled september 2013. album went on receive critical acclaim (with score of 82 on metacritic). 2 singles released album, prisms , taipei .

the band recorded companion soundtrack procedural sci-fi exploration title no man s sky. ten original works , 6 soundscapes composed 65daysofstatic game released on soundtrack, no man s sky: music infinite universe, on august 2016 digital , retail formats. iam8bit planning on releasing soundtrack on 2 lp-disc vinyl record set alongside game s release.
